Trucking company involved in Hwy 101 crash

The Bay Area trucking company whose driver caused the Oakland freeway meltdown was involved in a similar tanker crash in 1991 that shut down Highway 101 in Rohnert Park, but that accident is probably too old to be included in an investigation by authorities reviewing the company’s safety and maintenance records. Like the spectacular gasoline tanker crash 10 days ago that melted sections of the I-880 and I-580 interchanges, the driver in the April 25, 1991 accident miraculously escaped serious injury. However, the accident closed Highway 101 for six hours and forced evacuation of thousands of residents as black smoky clouds covered neighborhoods from Cotati to south Santa Rosa.

California Highway Patrol officials said they are reviewing the safety and maintenance records of Sabek Transportation Inc. of South San Francisco since 2004, but were not likely to extend their inquiry back to 1991.

CHP officials said they are focusing on the company’s records since January 2004 to determine whether its drivers had a history of infractions and accidents and whether its tanker fleet had a record of safety violations.
